Main components of a Hydraulic Power Pack

  1. Motor – the electric motor is a source of electric power that converts hydraulic pressure into torque/rotation to operate the pump
  2. Pump – there are three different types of hydraulic pumps (fixed displacement, variable, and manual) which are used to pressurise the hydraulic fluid and force it through the system
  3. Filter – removes any contaminants from the fluid, ensuring the system is kept at peak efficiency and the components are in working order
  4. Reservoir – often known as as an oil tank, the reservoir is used to hold the hydraulic fluid
  5. Control Valves – hydraulic control valves are used to start and stop the flow of fluid in a hydraulic system, as well as control the direction the fluid travels in
  6. Manifold – usually a solid metal block that holds the main valves on a HPU and acts as the switchboard of the unit, keeping components organised
  7. Pressure Gauge – required for monitoring the pressure and ensuring it stays within optimum range
  8. Accumulator (optional) – a vessel used for storing energy and providing emergency power in critical situations

What types of Hydraulic Power Pack are available?

When looking at different types of Hydraulic Power Pack, you would usually be thinking about the application or industry it will be used for, to determine the most appropriate specification. You may consider the following options in your choice of HPU type:

  • Fuel
  • Size
  • System configuration

Flowtech are able to provide off-the-shelf HPUs, but can also create a completely bespoke hydraulic power unit design, depending on the requirements of a project.

Types of Hydraulic Power Packs

Fuel Type

Fuel Types of Hydraulic power packs

When thinking about fuel type, you would usually have the choice of the following options:

  • Electric – you may choose an electric hydraulic power pack for low emissions, or for different characteristics such as quiet operation and high-precision operation
  • Petrol or Diesel – powered by a standard internal combustion engine, these types of HPU can also be used for mobile applications if required
  • Belt-driven – a hydraulic belt-driven power pack is a durable option as it absorbs vibration but usually has to be run at a lower RPM
  • Air motor – ideal for industrial applications with an air supply already installed

Size

sizes of power packs

Another important consideration is the size of a hydraulic power pack, ensuring that it fits specific dimensions if space is a key factor. For example, you may need a small hydraulic power unit for a tight space. This can lead to using one of several standard sizes or going for a completely bespoke design to ensure the HPU fits perfectly:

  • Micro – the most compact type of HPU, ideal for space-saving applications such as vehicle lifts, mobility lifts and automatic gates
  • Mini – this smaller HPU, available in AC and DC varieties, is widely used in vehicle trailers and tippers, as well as scissor lifts and other industrial machinery
  • Standard – available as a standard unit, these HPUs require no design modifications and as such are used in industrial applications where space is not a factor
  • Bespoke – creating a bespoke HPU means that you can indicate the exact internal specification and design it with specific dimensions in mind

System Configuration

system configuration

In terms of the actual functionality of the power pack, it’s important to distinguish the different systems available so you can choose the correct one for your application:

  • Single Acting – this system will use pressure to force a cylinder in one direction only, with the piston returning to its original starting position through passive retraction using a spring or just gravity on its own
  • Double Acting – if you require a cylinder or piston to move in two directions, a double acting system will help achieve this, utilising two ports on the cylinder to push and pull the piston
  • Dual double acting – this system is capable of pushing or pulling two separate cylinders at once, and is very useful for industrial equipment that can perform complex operations

How does Flowtech service hydraulic power packs?

We help businesses across the UK and Europe by leveraging our experience of working with hydraulic power packs to help come up with the best solution to match the industry, environment and application.

Most importantly, we help a customer find the solution that is right for them.

This could be the manufacture of a brand new HPU, the repair and refurbishment of an old HPU, or even the creation of a like-for-like unit that will replace a faulty HPU that has come to the end of its lifespan.

Our Process

Enquiry

This usually comes through a sales enquiry or directly to a Workshop Manager or Floor Manager at one of our Engineering Solution Centres (ESC)

Diagnosis

Flowtech engineers are dispatched to a site in order to diagnose the problem with the existing HPU. Often this is due to contamination of the oil, meaning the oil has to be analysed to find out where the problem lies. Metals in the oil will indicate which point in the hydraulic system the fault lies, if it is not the power unit itself

Fault-finding

If it is indeed the power unit that is at fault, the engineering team may choose to bring the HPU back to the ESC in order to disassemble it and replace any internal components that have failed, including heaters, filters or controllers

Design

Once the best solution for the customer is found and agreed upon, the design team will often be called upon to start creating detailed renderings of a solution through CAD programs such as Solidworks, to present to the customer and the engineering team so both have visibility over the specific dimensions, components and aesthetics

Manufacture

Working from an agreed job pack and completed circuit diagram, the power unit will then be assembled by our engineers to meet the exact requirements of the project. Like-for-like builds will often mean the team have had to reverse engineer a much older HPU and construct a new one to match the older specification

Testing

Before the power pack leaves the workshop, relevant testing will be completed to ensure the unit not only functions correctly but also meets all relevant industry standards

Installation

If required, Flowtech engineers will visit the site to install the new power units and to make sure they are properly integrated into the hydraulic system

Maintenance & Support

Our engineers are often utilised after project completion to support customers with the ongoing maintenance of hydraulic power packs, and with other hydraulic components that may become faulty within an older system

Case Studies

We have a number of relevant case studies where Flowtech has actively assisted customers with supplying HPUs or designing them from scratch for a particularly unique application.
